    Does anyone has color photos or links to sources of any of the MP Alco PA-2s/3s painted in solid jenks blue. They were numbered in 70 series. Thanks.

    I’ve been seeing them occasionally on eBay. I haven’t tried to track how many of them actually got repainted, but since there are also a number of photos of them un-repainted but with the new numbers, that suggests that not all of them were.

    Pure speculation on my part, but I suspect that, in the first couple of years after 1961 when the repaint program started, the passenger locomotive and car repainting may have moved fairly quickly, more so than that of repainting freight locomotives. Of course, at the same time, John German was trying to get rid of the non-EMD power so it’s hard to tell at this stage which program was moving faster. The fact that MP actually bought an E-8 along with the B&M lightweight passenger cars probably says something about this.

    Page 47
    PA3 #66 (Was #8023)
    Dipped in blue, white stripe along the bottom, Eagle on the nose. Looks like buzzsaws on the sides.
    Listed as Ft Worth in June 1963, scrapped in 1964.
    Not many Alcos in Blue. Jenks blue and the Alco purge were almost at the same time.

    A bit more detail….

    Watch eBay for photos. I haven’t been following the Alcos, because my interest is primarily engines before the renumbering. If you go in once a week, that’s probably good enough since most of the photos are on a 7-day bid cycle.

    Many years ago I bought some photos from Ralph Carlson. There may be a couple of shots in there of Alcos in blue. I moved my non-digitized photo collection to Wichita in the last trip, but I’ll be up there after Thursday so I’ll look.

    I’ve half-heartedly tried to maintain a database of some engines from that period with their features, but I don’t have anything on these. F units and Geeps, I can tell you something about.

    49, 57 and 77 for sure were blue. Mike Condren shot all of those in Little Rock, mid-1962 to early 1963. It would be a useful process to compile a list of which PA’s received Jenks blue and which ones went to scrap still in Eagle colors. I believe a Jenks PA pulled the last Pacific commuter run.

    Did the PA’s ever go into freight service when displaced by the non-EMD purge, or did they just got straight to the deadlines at Precision National?

    I saw a sales list of stuff being sold off the MoP PAs that were at Precision National, and the price for an Eagle was in the range of $20. Shipping was considerably more, and I was unable to persuade my parents to purchase one, my finances in the 8th grade not being sufficient to cover the cost. Surely others purchased one, but I have never seen a PA Eagle for sale (and very few of the EMD version).

    I’ve gathered photos from the web over the years and in addition to the 3 mentioned above, #66 is also documented as being in Jenks blue livery. The STL Post Dispatch archives do show the last commuter train being pulled by a PA – I’m unable to see a number on it.

    I had a chance to buy the Eagle in Ray Curls basement from his wife. He had it mounted on wood paneling. I’d passed as the thing was nine foot across and even me as ‘serious’ Mopac collector couldn’t see displaying something so large. A retired MP engineer bought it from her for $300 and took it to the Kane County RR show that summer an turned it for over $1k. It had an odd cut out on one side for I think a door handle.

    Another one documented: Engine 48, ex 8005, from a slide on eBay now. This is one that was repainted before the renumbering, so one of the first.

    In September 1963, Gene Hull took a couple of photos of the Alco PA dead line at North Little Rock. In this group, a total of six blue units can be seen, although we know the number of only one. A recap of the known blue units thus far: 47, 48, 49, 50, 52, 57, 58, 66, 68, 69, 75 and 77.

    At least two (and likely more) were repainted into Jenks blue before they were renumbered, including 8014 and 8026.

    Another question is when these units were actually pulled from service. They were still being used some, including on the Texas Eagle, in July 1963, but were all on the dead line by September 1963 if Gene Hull’s date notes are correct.

    49 PA in blue.
    RS-11 70 .4.75.77.72, and 954.
    RS3m – 1069 up to 1097, 16 images.

    Yet anther one, just seen on eBay: MP 58. This photo shows it at a shop, definitely derelict, some pieces missing including the lower headlight and the portion of the stainless Eagle that was mounted on the nose door. Horns are missing, as is the shield below the coupler that was supposed to protect the steam line.
