Here’s a quick model modern Mopac modelers can add to the layout. I found a Branchline Blueprint 40′ boxcar on eBay and stripped the paint using Scalecoat ‘Unpaint’. The ends in the kit weren’t correct for the MP prototype photo I was using so I borrowed a pair out of an 8′ door Branchline kit I had sitting around. After spraying a mix of Tru-Color Mopac BCR (TCP-139) and MKT brown (TCP-188) the car was given three coats of Tamiya Clear to get a high gloss finish.

I then used Hubert Mask decals http://mopac.org/store/models-and-decals/ho-scale-decals/item/196-mask-island-decal-87-236-missouri-pacific-126592-series-40-boxcar. Nice thing about using Hubert’s decals you can do two cars with the same set or if your decals get blotched up in the process you have a backup on hand. Once the decals were dry I overcoated them with thinned Dullcote. I did have to raid my decal stash for the ACI labels; Herald King made a set of just ACI labels that’s easily found.

I recently bought a TrainMaster.TV DVD set titled ‘Weathering with Mike Confalone’ Volume 1: Weathering Freight Cars’. Mike doesn’t use an airbrush for weathering but washes and PanPastels. I picked up some different browns, black, light gray and blue PanPastels at Dick Blick and used the browns and black to lightly weather this model. You do have to seal the pastels with Dullcote after their application.
