The line built out of KC across northeastern Kansas and southeastern Nebraska. In Kansas it was the “Kansas City, Wyandotte & North Western”; at the state line it became the “Kansas City & Beatrice”. The goal was to link KC with the state capital of Lincoln; however, they only got it built to Virginia in 1889. At Virginia it met the Rock Island Fairbury – Horton line. The KC&NW gained trackage rights over the RI between Virginia and Beatrice. This is as far as the railroad got. In 1894 the line was taken over by the MP, which ended the trackage rights into Beatrice with it only being a “branchline” to Virginia. And that is fairly much how it lasted till abandonment in 1918.

    From Dave Seidel
First passenger train out of Kansas City Union Station in November 1914 was the Romantic Sounding VIRGINIA CITY EXPRESS on the KC&NW.
