Missouri Pacific Station Sign

The original station signs on the Missouri Pacific were made of cast iron, were very heavy, and were an oval shape. At each station these signs were located one mile from the depot on both sides of the depot. I have two of these signs, one was found thrown over the side of the right of way still attached to the pole at Reeds Spring, Missouri. I am not sure where the other sign is from but I think it was from Cricket, Arkansas.

I have one of the cast highway crossing signs of similar design, cast, with an X – the sign shape itself square with triangle on top. How many different cast signs were made?

I know there was also a ‘W’ for water but not sure of others.

I was looking in the Maintenance of Way Standard Drawings – Volume One and if you go to about the middle of the book (there are no page numbers), go to the page that has standard grade crossing stop signs and in the bottom right hand corner it has page 402.3-F. File No M-3500 and for the next 17 pages, these pages show all kinds of signs and I Guess in the early years they were all made of cast iron like the station sign and the crossing bucks.

Adding some more information to my previous post here are some of the signs that are shown in the maintenance of way standard drawings. Stop signs at road/rail crossings, warning close clearance signs for industry tracks, standard speed limit signs, grade crossing whistle sign, railroad crossing, junction, drawbridge, one mile sign, block sign, snow flanger sign, yard limit sign, lap siding sign, passenger train stop, name board for industrial track, block signs, speed restriction signs.
