This is a fun film to watch. A time when we celebrated our industries!

This is sure good news. I thought that line was going to do nothing but rust away. Jerry Michels

An accurate G-Scale model of the 700-class caboose would be really nice. Jerry Michels

Charlie, you mean that happens to you too? I am still looking for a slide of a Magor caboose that fell behind the workbench when it was still in the garage. That workbench is long gone, but no slide ever showed up. My usual rule is to lose something else and you will find the first thing you lost. Jerry

I agree, I am too far along to work at bashing this model. Although it is appealing. I have about four or five MP resin kit gons in various states of assembly. Jerry

Great find Ron. What a fine load too! Great place to put all that junk we accumulate. I take it no model is available for these cars.

Ron, The gray hopper is really interesting. I have several of these (Overland N&W brass models both wood and rebuilt with steel sides). I had no idea they survived to be painted in “covered hopper” gray. Mine will remain black and in coal service, but this is still interesting. On a 1960s layout, one of these in gray would be a real eye-catcher. Jerry

These are such good articles. Back in the 1980s when I was working on the Eastern Division line revision of the 1920s I saw these articles and others in Railroad Signaling and Railway Engineering at the Texas A&M library. However, there was no way to scan articles at that time, so I had to settle for poor photocopies from huge bound volumes of the magazines. I really wanted some of the photos for my articles, but that never happened. I even wrote Simmons-Boardman (the publishers) to see if that had archived photos but never got a response. Nice to live in this electronic age!

Bill, this has been a wonderful read. I love seeing the actual historical documents. Thanks for taking the time to put this all together, annotating it and posting! One question, there are several “orders” that are not on forms, just scraps of paper with a note. Would this be ancillary notes? Never seen these before. Jerry

    Hi Bill,

Well, I “thought” I had seen it all! Never saw a photo of these cars. Although I don’t have any information, it sure was a treat for me this morning.

Hi Cliff, The blue “cowcatcher” history is somewhat difficult, but at one time or another the scheme was applied to the E3s, E6s, and the first E7. Some units had white then blue then white. I did an article in the Eagle on these a few years back. Jerry Michels

    Charlie,

The railroads used stock cars from various roads on a seasonal basis. So if the MP needed stock cars and NYC had stock cars available, they were used for a time. I found this out analyzing the conductor records on the Warsaw Branch. There were foreign road stock cars almost everyday including Milwaukee Road and Pennsy.
