I model the former Mopac Bagnell Branch that ran from the passenger station in Jefferson City to Bagnell, Missouri in HO scale. In 1946 part of the line was abandoned so the line ran from Jeff City to Eldon. I’ve managed to include all the small towns on the line Lohman, Russellville, Enon, Olean and Eldon. At Eldon I have a small Rock Island yard so the MP and RI can interchange cars. During operating sessions two operate the MP local and two operate the RI. The track plan is point to point and replicates the track and industries seen in 1954. The layout was in Model Railroad Planning 2010 but has since been expanded so I could add Lohman.

It’s a 50′ long point to point between two interchanges with two settlements on the line. But mine doesn’t look this good. I’ve been studying Charlie’s layout almost 2 years now to get ideas for the scenery especially. I’ve made some progress but this layout only has another year or two to live before I retire, move to the MS Gulf Coast, and build a real layout.

Do you have a current track plan to see the changes ?
July 11, 2015 at 8:42 pm #6738clemmie_doris12ParticipantCharlie, your layout is extremely impressive. Marilyn looked at some of these photos and told me that I was going to have to enlist your help when I finally start on my layout. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing.

I put up all the railroad depots, outhouses, tool houses and the 1950 era freight cars and put down the Athearn Genesis MP GP15-1 and GP38-2, a few freight cars I’d bought at the meet and the Bluford Shops caboose. So the Mopac was in place but it needed a modern Rock Island in the mix. I’d socked away a RI Bachmann GP7 with DCC and sound when they were $109 and stripped the paint off using 91% rubbing alcohol. Tru-Color RI blue and white were used with a Heald King decals. The only modifications to the shell were removing the foot boards and replacing with .010 plastic to resemble the RI prototype. I also added lift rings and hand grabs up the front and rear noses and sun shades.

September 26, 2015 at 7:03 pm #7273peggyrothschildParticipantHere’s a couple of updates to the branch operations. The SHPX 33,000 gallon tank car is an Atlas model was added for a loaded anhydrous ammonia interchange move between the Rock Island and the MP at Eldon. The Mopac local will then spot the car to the farm supply at Russellville on the return trip to Jeff City. The tank had large red factory lettering for Royson on the sides. I removed it with lettering and decal remover and added the COTS blocks and ACI label. The area around the ends and trucks were given a liberal air brushing of Dullcote with some black and brown mixed in to denote right of way spray off the trucks. Rust streaks were added using oil paints and odorless turpentoid.
The RI GP7 got some additional grime and a few rust streaks using oils and odorless turpentoid. This is the Bachmann locomotive that is pretty inexpensive. Runs and sounds great.

September 27, 2015 at 3:16 am #7274bargetanikaParticipantWill you eventually go back to 1955 or whatever year it was before?
September 27, 2015 at 4:45 pm #7275peggyrothschildParticipantWe have a visitor, who grew up in Russellville in the 1950’s so I’ve already used ‘the way back machine’ and the layout was changed back yesterday. All it takes is putting away the 1980s era freight cars (less than 20) and three locomotives – maybe 15 minutes of effort. The depots, privies, tool houses, period cars and trucks are all back on the layout. In fact we ran the local last night using a Baldwin S12 and the LCL caboose.

September 28, 2015 at 3:59 pm #7280kenrisParticipantSince the Bagnell Branch is being “imagineered” to 1979, you might want to consider adding new industries that developed between 1955 and 1979. A likely choice would be frozen poultry, similar to the Tyson plant in Searcy, AR. Such a plant at, say, Russelville would create a need for the branch’s existence and the continued RI interchange at Eldon. ART reefers could be sent to Jeff City for cleaning and delivery to the on-line plant. Then you would have a need for several 70 ton ART cars

This would be a nice addition and I like adding the mechanical reefers to the mix. I have several buildings in Russellville that can easily be taken off the layout. I just need to design a structure that will fit between the highway and house track that resembles a poultry plant. The feed mills are pretty much ‘planted’ in the landscape and can’t be moved.
October 4, 2015 at 12:55 pm #7310peggyrothschildParticipantAdded a Kadee 50′ boxcar to the branch’s 1979 inventory. Much of the factory lettering was removed with a decal remover then given a coat of Dullcote. After this was dry I went over the sides with turpentoid mixed with a little burnt Sierra oil paint. Roof was brush pained gray, then the stiffeners painted with Burnt Sierra and some rust areas added.
I then airbrushed patches of Tru-Color 118 on the roof to match an overhead photo I had of a SSW boxcar. Last bit of detailing was to use a light brown pencil to show where the doors scraped the sides. Added decals for the U-1 code, COTS and ACI label to bring it up to the 1970’s.I remember several cars like this in the late 1970’s where some of the railroads were deferring maintenance on their older freight cars.
