I’ve often seen requests for doghouse plans. Not sure where I got this – dimensions are for HO
September 3, 2020 at 2:59 pm #9895peggyrothschildParticipantJoe Collias has these cast in brass 30 years ago and looking at one they aren’t all that great. Would be nice if someone could make these and the locomotive lights that went behind the smoke stack in 3D.
September 7, 2020 at 6:49 pm #9932John HardcastleMemberI have made three of the steel dog houses in recent years and have really thought about making a kit in brass to offer. I also have been thinking of making a kit for the front throttle since I have had to make those enough to make me think about them also in kit form.
I was about to make another dog house for the 17b tender I just completed but was informed that there was no dog house until freight service in 1949-1950 on tender behind the P 73. Somewhere in the final years. So I opted to not go with a dog house on this particular tender.

Cut off a spike and mount it in a variable speed device and use a very fine file and make the housing and light portion. Drill a small hole in the bottom and cement a brass wire in it and solder mount it on the booster exhaust. It looks very good..

I’ll update you on my progress. It may be slow, we’ll see.
Thanks, Jeff

There’s dimensions in this thread and if you search on doghouse on this site there’s a prototype photo from 5/21/2018 I posted.October 11, 2021 at 9:29 pm #10332lenaculbert50ParticipantJeff,
I have a 3D drawing of the doghouse if you would like to use. It’s based on the dimensions above and Charlie’s earlier image. I’ll send it if you would like to print. I can give you an .stl or .step file.
I’m not sure about the roof angle from the drawing dimensions. Charlie’s image doesn’t look like it has that angle and it seems odd to me in the 3D image.

That would be great! My user name is also my email address, your generosity is greatly appreciated!

Thanks Charlie!

Here’s several doghouse images that I copied from the MISSouri Pacific Historical Society Collias and Leeman collection. These provide the roof angle and interior details. Looking forward to seeing how the 3D part comes out. If you click on each image they’ll be sharper. Obviously the roof angle in the 3D drawing needs to be adjusted to more of a curve. I learned years ago there was a doghouse sitting on the ground in the 12th St Louis yards. Unfortunately no one seemed to take photos or measurements.821A66F9-6AD2-4BD8-A327-1F8BB0343058.jpeg[/attachment:agr7scyn]C121856C-13B6-42EB-8419-AFF51FB67A91.jpeg[/attachment:agr7scyn]DB92F239-E8A0-4826-A734-EA1AC4BBF60C.jpeg[/attachment:agr7scyn]4F445B47-3DEA-46C0-878C-2AD2635448AF.jpeg[/attachment:agr7scyn]91A759B3-DC73-48BB-AB46-651558602793.jpeg[/attachment:agr7scyn]9990D335-EE74-4DAB-AF6C-7C074149634F.jpeg[/attachment:agr7scyn]9B30B68A-5E92-43E2-9D84-FAA348089E7D.jpeg[/attachment:agr7scyn]
October 12, 2021 at 12:19 pm #10336lenaculbert50ParticipantJeff,
The drawing dimensions call for a slope from front to back. I don’t see that slope in Charlie’s pictures. It’s what makes the drawing look odd to me.
I sent you a file version you can edit. If you have trouble with it, let me know and I’ll make changes for you.

October 12, 2021 at 2:35 pm #10337mopacKeymasterLooking at the last photo, 1405 appears to have a different size doghouse. A skinner & taller.

October 13, 2021 at 10:44 pm #10338jean-michel.tParticipantThanks Charlie! Those really help out. I’m noticing there’s quite the variation in doghouses. Once I get the exterior knocked out, adding an interior would be a nice touch.
Mike, thank you, I’ll check it out this evening. The screenshot looks really good.
I’ll print my first attempt Monday. I’m a 100% sure I’ll have to make adjustments after that.
November 1, 2021 at 7:41 pm #10348jean-michel.tParticipantBoy, time flies! I’ve been working on this doghouse in my spare time for a while. I’m on my third printing and I think I’m getting close. The one I’ve come up with has a curved roof versus a peaked roof. I’ll make a peaked roof version next after I get the body details right on the curved version.
Here’s pictures of my current work. For those who want to respond, please be critical and let me know what you think. The hardest part for me has been getting the detail to show up when I print, like rivets.
It’s been fun learning how to use software like TinkerCAD and ChituBox.
If this turns out successful, I hope to be able to share the .stl file on here.
November 1, 2021 at 7:42 pm #10349jean-michel.tParticipantHere’s the third picture I meant to post!
November 2, 2021 at 1:46 am #10351lenaculbert50ParticipantHi Jeff. Looks good so far. Details do take some time to figure out. It helped me to spray a quick coat of primer on test prints. The primer adds some contrast to make the details easier to see. Mike
