I’m going to be painting this cab within the next two or three months. Does anyone have a good sample for the correct vermilion red color? Matching the color is no problem as long as I have a good sample. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Charlie, your layout is extremely impressive. Marilyn looked at some of these photos and told me that I was going to have to enlist your help when I finally start on my layout. Keep up the good work and thanks for sharing.
Fred, I was the brakeman on a Missouri Pacific local that had the exact same problem in the exact same location. This would have been in late 1978 or early 1979. The conductor was Paul Leathers. He was short and thin and liked to talk. We had been fighting with this car for several miles and were on the wye between the two Santa Fe mains in this area and pretty much out of the way of their operations when we heard the siren go off. I’m sure the individual that saw the smoke thought the tank car was on fire and going to blow up. After the fire department had the fire out, the conductor went across the way to a store (local co-op, if I remember correctly) and bought some grease cartridges to lube the offending journal. I don’t remember how far the car made it before we set it out, but we were able to get off the Santa Fe before we had to stop for it.
I would be willing to bet that this was the same incident. If true, what are the odds that this event would set in motion life events that eventually lead to this thread on this forum. Amazing!
Nope. I think I will leave it as last modified. Replacing the existing glazing which has a slight haze will be expensive enough. The biggest issue with putting the removed windows back in is the frame. None of the FRA Part 223 glazing that is present on this caboose matches the size of those windows. They used a window meant for an end door on the conductor’s window when they upgraded the glazing.
I don’t think Marilyn needs to know when I’m in the caboose. But, that won’t matter during deer season. She’ll be hanging out of the crow’s nest with rifle in hand.

Here’s a more current photo.

Nice sign, Steve. I just inherited one of these, myself. It’s going to need a little paint in order to look as good as yours.
We have put together a discount package for those that would like to ride the Texas Eagle to the convention. Also, we are going to have a commemorative, limited edition T-shirt for the convention.
Details for both subjects are now posted on the website.
Don’t worry, Patrick. We have plenty of GCL caps in stock. By the way it looks, we are going to have to reorder some of the Texas caps before the convention. We don’t want to go down there empty handed.
