Looks like the Captain, I mean engineer stayed with the ship while it was being rerailed. Also noticed what appears to be a Mopac panel-side gondola in the foreground.

One thing I forgot about is a video that is available online that discusses the farming around Gypsum in the 1950s, but shows the Mopac switching cars and other railroad views. I thought it was at the Kansas Memories website, but wasn’t able to find it.

Another option is to contact Kansas University Kenneth Spencer library and ask about the Howard Killam Collection. He photographed I believe nearly every depot in Kansas plus there are additional views of some towns plus there is still a large portion of his slides in the collection that’s not been cataloged – or at least hadn’t when I visited which reminds me I need to go back and go through the collection once again.

There was another gentleman – Richard Napper – who is now deceased who had a large photo collection that files can be purchased from, but I don’t know what happened to his collection.

I’m not aware of any yellow T&P box cars in this series. From what information I’ve found the 41000-41199 series were build in 1951 by the Press Steel Car Co. They had diagonal panel roof, early improved dreadnought ends (R+3/4 pattern), riveted sides and closely resembles the DeSoto built cars for the Mopac.

I would think it depends on location. For my area of northern Kansas I know the Mopac took part the Far-Mar-Co shipments in the late 70s/early 80s to the terminals/ports from the large Far-Mar-Co elevator located at Hastings, NE, so those cars would have been seen. That would include Cooperative Marketing Association, Farmland, West Central Coop, Equity Grain Coop cars. Far-Mar-Co also was located in Wichita, Ks. You can include Lincoln Grain in the Kansas/Nebraska area. Producer’s grain purchased several coop elevators on my line so their cars would be seen plus they had elevators in Texas. There was a Garvey grain elevator also. I also have photos of Cargill cars and a ADM Evans 4780 car was derailed on my line.

I am looking forward to the next run of Tangent Mopac 4740 and a (hopefully soon) run of Mopac 4750 cars as they along with the ACF 4600 cars (Athearn Genesis future release) were thick on my branch line. Can’t have enough home road cars either.

How I’ve been able to find the information is google search the company – for instance Far-Mar-Co and see if there are cooperate records that show where they owned elevators. Lucky for me the records are located in a university near my home. Also study photos to see what cars are in the trains. The vast majority of covered hoppers on my branch seem to be Mopac cars however that could be unique to my area. I did pick up one or two cars for roads that crossed my line and had interchanges.

Good to hear about your plans for the 3039 model. I have attached a June 1984 photo of 3039 with the double Eagle. You can see it still has the rear chevrons. I would imagine the rear number boards would have been painted over as called for by the revised practice.

738 was renumbered to 3038.

It looks like both were retired in July 1984.

After going through the photos of the SD40 that I have, a large number of the 90 SD40s the Mopac owned received a full repaint with the majority occurring in the 1978-1982 time frame. Some were not repainted and wore the original paint scheme until they were retired, etc. If you have a specific number in mind, I can look at my photos and see if it was repainted or not. I do have photographic evidence that 3039, 3051, and 3053 all had the “double eagle”. 3051 was interesting as it had it’s original paint in March 1975, a double eagle prior to April 1976, and full Screaming eagle with large numbers by January 1978.
