The Mansard roof on the first ‘laff of the day’ (the brass caboose) is a nice touch.

Only if the Coast Daylight is equipped with GOTransit-style bi-level cars and punctuated with a brass-rail heavyweight observation car.

I enjoy these Laffs of the Day, Pat. Hope you continue to keep your eyes open for them.

I have some black-and-white photos of “hooping up lunch” at Illmo in the early 1980s. Will post at least one if I can figure out where they are. There was a stand patterned after a train-order stand, only with flat metal plates instead of forks. The crew ordered lunch by radio and sack lunches were placed in two cardboard boxes, one for the head-end crew and one for the caboose crew. One of the boxes was placed on each metal plate. Each box had a bail made out of twine and a member of the crew at each end of the train would put his or her arm through the bail, empty the cardboard box of its contents, and toss the box out along the right-of-way to be retrieved by a member of the beanery staff. Not sure whether that service was provided to MoPac crews, Cotton Belt crews or both, or why lunch was provided on the fly.

I’m a Frisco ex myself, Steve, and will add my welcome to the forum. Tried to go to work for the Missouri Pacific, but wound up with the Frisco instead. We had a joint meeting of the MoPac and Frisco groups a few years ago in Joplin, Mo., and we all got along just fine together.

Know this is not the MoP, but on the Frisco in the mid- to late ’70s, sales promotional items (Cross pen and pencil sets, desk sets with scissors and letter openers, playing cards, book matches and so on) were for customers only. Safety promotional items (caps, jackets, key chains and such) went to Operating Department (Transportation, Mechanical, Engineering) employees.

A Frisco ex confirming Ron’s 1965 date for the mandarin orange (which my boss at the Frisco always referred to as mandarin red) and white paint scheme. The black and gold was still around, though, when I came on the scene in late 1974, mostly on switch engines that had had their original prime movers replaced with EMDs.

It’s a great resource, Gary, but anyone considering a purchase should note that it only lists customers at points served by more than MoPac Lines. California, Mo., which I model, for example, is not listed, since it was only served by MP.

Don’t have access to a 1963 employee timetable, but it appears from the one effective May 1, 1962, that the line between Lincoln and Union was operated by timetable and train order. Yard limits were in effect at numerous points. No indication of any signals between Eagle and Weeping Water. Hope this helps.

    Makes sense to me. Chris?

After the HO set is finalized would it make more sense to do a N scale Jenks era passenger set with numbers, buzz saws and the 3″ stripe?

Intriguing! How much per set would the MPHS member price be if we ordered the 15-set minimum?
I’d have to tally up how many I’d need. Chris, and you HO folks who would use them on vehicles, how about you?

We’d have to have enough N scale sets to make it worthwhile I normally order 15 sets minimum. To complicate matter Hubert normally does two cars in each set. So can you and Chris get enough orders?

Charlie, next time you talk to Hubert, would you see if he can do N scale decals. I could use some for the car being discussed. Thanks, Chris Mueller

Looks to me like an eastward train at Dow, just west of Tipton, Mo., which I think you can see in the background. US Highway 50 is to the right.

Hubert of Mask Island Decals has several N sets. I think there are 40 and 50 ft box cars among others. I have talked to him about doing some sheets of just numbers, for the various 50 ft box cars, some flats and gons that I need multiple numbers for. A few “MP” and maybe a buzz saw or two but mostly just numbers. Anybody else interested in something like that? My thought was to have all unique numbers and buy three or four sheets to make sure I got two on successfully. Still don’t have a price, but it would probably be better if there were a few of us. I need mostly white numbers for MoPac, but I need black and white for Frisco. If I could get this chore done it would help my layout a lot.

Don’t get on the forum very often, Steve, but I’d be interested in the numbers project if you’re still talking with Hubert.
